Canada’s Super Visa program allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to stay in Canada for extended periods. With this visa, eligible family members can visit for up to five years per entry, and the visa itself can remain valid for up to ten years. If more time is needed, applicants may also request an extension of up to two additional years while in Canada.
Eligibility & Requirements
To qualify for a Super Visa, applicants must meet the following:
Host Requirements: The child or grandchild in Canada must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. They must also meet the minimum necessary income for their family size, based on the number of dependants in Canada and abroad. A written commitment of financial support is required.
Medical Insurance: Applicants must provide proof of paid private health insurance with at least CAD $100,000 coverage, valid for at least one year from the date of entry. The policy must cover health care, hospitalisation, and repatriation, and must be valid for each entry to Canada. Insurance may be purchased from a Canadian company or from a foreign insurer that has been formally approved by the Minister of Immigration. Coverage must be maintained for the duration of the stay.
Medical Exam: A medical examination by an IRCC-approved panel physician is required for all Super Visa applicants.
Other Requirements: Applicants must apply from outside Canada, hold a valid passport, and satisfy the officer that they will leave at the end of their authorised stay. Standard admissibility checks for security and health apply.
Final approval is always at the discretion of the visa officer, and applications must demonstrate strong family ties, financial support, and compliance with Canadian immigration law.
Extended Stay: Up to five years per entry, with the option to apply for a two-year extension from within Canada.
Multiple Entries: Valid for up to ten years, allowing parents and grandparents to come and go as needed.
